Abstract / Poster Submission

The following contains the guidelines, instructions and deadlines concerning abstract submission for the NHG Annual Scientific Congress 2008.

The Abstract Submission portal is now closed. Results of shortlisted abstracts will be announced on 15 August 2008.

Eligibility Criteria

Competitive Categories

  • NHG Doctor Award (NHGD) - Any NHG Doctor who conducts Translational Research, Clinical Research, or Health Services Research
  • NHG Young Investigator Award (NHG YIA)
    • Basic Science Research / Translational Research - Any NHG staff, age 40 years and below (as at 31 Dec 2008) who conducts Basic Science Research or Translational Research
    • Clinical Research - Any NHG staff, age 40 years and below (as at 31 Dec 2008) who conducts clinical research in any medical discipline
    • Health Services Research / Quality Research - Any NHG staff, age 40 years and below (as at 31 Dec 2008) who conducts Health Services Research / Quality Research
  • Best Oral Presentation – Open to all participants (including non-NHG staff)
  • Best Poster Presentation – Open to all participants (including non-NHG staff)

Non-Competitive Categories

  • Submission for non-competitive categories is open to all participants (including non-NHG staff).

Receipt of Abstracts

Receipt of abstract submission will be acknowledged via email. You will be provided with an abstract reference number. Please refer to this reference number in all correspondence regarding the abstract.

Abstract may not be withdrawn after submission.

Review and Notification Process

Review of Abstracts

The ASC Scientific Committee will review all abstract submissions. Only abstracts of sufficient merit will be shortlisted for publishing. The review criteria are as follows:

  • Background and hypothesis of research is clearly stated
  • Methods used are appropriate, including statistical tests applied where appropriate
  • Results found are in line with the research hypothesis
  • Discussion and conclusions are clear and succinct
  • Impact of study on medical knowledge and clinical translation

Notification of Shortlisted Abstracts

Notification of shortlisted abstracts will be sent via email by 15 August 2008.

Shortlisted Abstracts (for all Categories)

Upon receipt of notification of shortlist, authors of all shortlisted abstracts must submit the following:

  • Summary Poster - The summary posters will be displayed on the virtual poster wall, at the Congress Venue.
  • Full A0-sized Poster (in soft copy) - Softcopy of the A0-size poster will be made available to the delegates at the virtual poster viewing terminals located around the Congress Venue and at our website from the first day of our Congress Event.

All shortlisted abstracts will also be published in the Annals of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (Proceedings of NHG ASC 2008). Submission of abstracts therefore constitutes the authors' consent to have the abstracts published in the Annals.

Top 3 Abstracts (Finalists) for Competitive Categories

The top three (3) shortlisted abstracts in each of the Competitive Categories (NHGD, NHG YIAs, Best Oral, Best Poster) will be the Finalists for the Awards.
The finalists will be required to submit the following:

  • Summary Poster - The summary posters will be displayed on the virtual poster wall, at the Congress Venue.
  • Full A0-sized Poster (in soft copy) - Softcopy of the A0-size poster will be made available to the delegates at the virtual poster viewing terminals located around the Congress Venue and at our website from the first day of our Congress Event.
  • Full A0 Poster (in hardcopy) - All finalists' posters will be displayed at the Congress Venue.
  • Presentation Slides for Oral Presentation

Applicable only to NHGD, NHG YIAs and Best Oral Categories - All qualifying Finalists in these categories will be required to make an oral presentation at the ASC Oral Papers Session on 7 November 2008. Authors will be notified of the presentation schedules at a later date.

  • Best Poster Competition

All qualifying Finalists are to be present at their displayed posters during the judging session for the Best Poster Competition. Authors will be notified of the judging schedules at a later date.

Submission Deadlines:

  • Summary Poster – 8 October 2008
  • Full A0 Poster (in soft copy) – 8 October 2008
  • Full A0 Poster (in hardcopy) 15 October 2008
  • Presentation Slides for Oral Presentation – 15 October 2008

Failure to submit the above will result in disqualification from the competition.

Awards Presentation

  • Awards will be presented at the NHG ASC Congress Dinner on 7 November 2008.
  • For NHGD, NHG YIAs and Best Oral Presentation categories, the presenting author will be the named winner (regardless whether he / she is the first author or not). For Best Poster category, the first author will be the named winner.
  • Attendance at the Dinner is compulsory for all Finalists.
  • The ASC Secretariat will contact the relevant authors at a later date with more information.
